Name origin

Has anybody noticed that Belinsk is a portmanteau of the Eastern European country, Belarus and its capital, Minsk?

13 years late, but the name is probably more like an obscured and shortened version of the city's Japanese name origin, Verkhneudinsk (now known as Ulan-Ude). Beruhune + udinsk = Beluhuneudinsk = Belhuninsk = Belinsk. Incidentally, the architecture seems to take more inspiration from nearby Irkutsk, located north of Lake Baikal (and thus also more geographically identifiable with Belinsk being north of Lake Bycal). Irkutsk is also on the Angara River that flows out of Lake Bycal to the Yenisei and the Arctic Ocean beyond; Border Town is very clearly based on the Bridge-City over the Yenisei known as Krasnoyarsk, not far from the confluence of the Angara with the other sources of the Yenisei, as Border Town is just south of where the various rivers of Bilibin and Morgal meet. :) Marandahir (talk) 15:53, 4 February 2024 (CST)Reply[reply]
