Curse Mage class series

From Golden Sun Universe

The Curse Mage class series is a dual-elemental class series available only to the Venus Adept Himi. She requires both Mars and Venus Djinn to become this class series. It has many of the abilities exclusive to the (no longer included) Dark Mage class series, though it lacks the Call Psynergy series and Revive, replacing them with the Undead Curse Psynergy series and the Impair Psynergy series.

The class series at its highest stage of Diabolist has very high PP, good Agility, average Attack, but lower Defense and below average HP. The series' Luck rating is average. Noteworthy Psynergy from an endgame perspective are Toxic Grit, Undead Might, and the heaviest area-of-effect Psynergy it has is Dire Inferno. Average stats from an endgame perspective are 150% (160% if one doesn't factor in Luck).

As of Dark Dawn, an Adept in this class series is especially likely to be affected by Stun-inducing effects.

Analysis

The Curse Mage class is a dual-elemental class unique to Himi, considered to be her counterpart to the warrior-style Adepts' Brute class and effectively the pendant to The Lost Age's Dark mage class. Statistically speaking, the class is an excellent upgrade from her base class. Compared to Himi's more fragile base class, the Curse Mage is more rounded, with more HP, Attack, and Defense, wile keeping her durable PP pool and good Agility. The Curse Mage has only standard Luck, but this weakness is limited, as Himi has the highest innate Luck.

The Curse Mage has a wide range of Psynergy, both offensive and status inducing. The Undead Curse Psynergy series is an Elemental Power-based version of the Call Psynergy series, being a powerful single-target attack; Being Power-based however, the series will not reach the high levels of damage possible with the Call series. Meanwhile, the Raging Heat Psynergy series provides a strong ranged series. The class's most useful status altering moves for non-boss battles are most likely Fear Puppet and Toxic Grit. Fear Puppet can stun multiple targets, while Toxic Grit both damages opponents and can inflict Venom. Notably absent from the series is Revive, unlike its Warrior-style counterpart. A possible reasoning for this lies in the Curse Mage's Psynergy lineup revolving around death.

Overall, the Curse Mage is an excellent supporter and spellcaster, with the benefit of giving Himi more durability that her mono-elemental class. However, if the loss of Himi's healing talents and unique Weapon Grace is too much, then the Miko class is still a good option. Should the player wish for Himi to play a more physical role, as opposed to her normal supporter role, the Ninja class series is a good option.

Trivia

  • This is one of two Dual-elemental class series to learn three elements worth of Psynergy, the other being the Scrapper class series. Both class series are unique to specific characters: Only Himi can access the Curse Mage class series, and the Scrapper class series is exclusively for Sveta. This is likely not coincidental; both class series were among the class series added in Dark Dawn, and the only dual-element classes that are character-specific.
